Our education programme offers students the opportunity to:
  • Experience the rich history of this ambitious conservation project - New Zealand's largest pest-free fenced sanctuary (past, present and future).
  • Build on their knowledge about New Zealand's unique biodiversity (flora, fauna and fungi).
  • Discover how two significant conservation technologies (pest-proof fencing and pest eradication) have enabled the ecological restoration of the mountain,
  • Become field conservation scientists as they learn new skills and act as kaitiaki for our taonga.

Programme delivery:

Our expert educators will stimulate student interest, build on student knowledge and engage their senses through a range of hands-on activities as they hikoi through the ngahere.

Activities might include:

Conservation challenges: Introduced pests and predators.

Where did they come from? Why are they considered pests? What can we do?

Birds, reptiles, invertebrates and plants – discover the interconnections/ interdependence within the forest ecosystem.

What adaptations and different roles do living things play within the forest?

Which native species have been translocated to Maungatautari?

How do we care for, survey and monitor these species?

Experience native wildlife in the wild!

During your guided hikoi students might see:

North Island robins, tomtits, kākā, tūī, bellbirds, hihi, tīeke, fantails, pōpokotea, kererūand wētā.
