Tautari Wetlands at Dusk

From NZD $57.00
  • Duration: 90 Minutes (approx.)
  • Location: Pukeatua, New Zealand
  • Product code: TWAD

Nestled in the valley below the visitor centre is the Tautari Wetlands, protected by both a QEII covenant and our pest-proof fence. This picturesque wetland habitat is a safe haven for two of our taonga species.

Upon the setting sun, head down to the Tautari Wetlands and keep an eye out for our endearing takahē whānau as they settle in for the evening. Thought to be lost forever, the takahē is a conservation icon and made history when they were rediscovered in the remote mountains of Fiordland in 1948. This large, flightless bird helped shape the future of conservation techniques in New Zealand. Encountering a takahē for the first time can transport you to a pre-historic world!

Enter the tuatarium on dusk and engage the senses by listening and looking out for tuatara who are most active at night. Tuatara are the sole surviving members of an ancient group of reptiles found only in New Zealand. See their unique characteristics and hear about their life history and journey to Maungatautari.
