New Zealand’s mild temperatures make it an unusual place for so many native fern species. About 40% of our fern species aren’t found anywhere else in the world. There are around 200 species of ferns in New Zealand, they range from 10 metre high tree ferns to two centimeters long.

Maungatautari has an astonishing variety of ferns easily viewable on this tour. Your guide will provide you with interesting and unusual facts about our native ferns and help you identify the different species as you enjoy a walk through our protected forest on the slopes of Sanctuary Mountain® Maungatautari. You will see examples of tufted, creeping, climbing, perching and tree ferns..

You might also see these other native species North Island robins, tomtits, kākā, tūī, bellbirds, hihi, tīeke, fantails, kererū and wētā.

By booking on this tour your contribution helps Sanctuary Mountain® continue to protect the rare and endangered species that live wild on Maungatautari. A complimentary Sanctuary Explorer Pass is included and we invite you to continue exploring the forest at the end of the tour.

  • Please check in at Manu Tīoriori visitor centre at least 10 minutes prior to your tour. Here you will pick up your Sanctuary Explorer Pass and visitor guide map and receive instructions as to where to meet your guide.

***Please note the Sanctuary Explorer Pass can only be used during daylight hours on the day of it's issue.
